Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG)

PURPOSE:
To provide operational support and essential social services to emergency shelters and transitional housing facilities for homeless individuals and families; and to prevent homelessness.

Funding Source:
Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG) Program Funds

Eligible Applicants:
Shelters and other homeless providers.

Use of Funds:

  • Renovation, rehabilitation, and conversion of buildings for use as emergency shelters or transitional housing for homeless people;
  • Essential services;
  • Operating costs, such as maintenance, insurance, rent, etc;
  • Homeless prevention; and
  • Administration

Application:
In 1993, HUD developed a single planning and application process for the administration of CDBG, ESG and HOPWA funds.  The City of Providence, Department of Planning and Development, through an annual notification process that commences every December, will consider funding of programs that address housing, economic development, public service and continuum of care (homelessness, persons living with HIV/AIDs) and community needs for the program year.
