Neighborhood Markets Program (NMP)
Mayor David N. Cicilline

MISSION STATEMENT:
The Neighborhood Markets  Program will use public and private resources to revitalize eight key Providence commercial corridors in partnership with local merchant associations.

Need:
A neighborhood cannot thrive without viable public commercial space.
"Viability" requires aesthetically pleasing storefronts, clean sidewalks, walkability, safety and streetscape improvement (street furniture, green space/trees, attractive trash cans, lights, signage, etc.)

Goal:
Revitalize and strengthen neighborhood business districts to encourage economic growth, entrepreneurship and improve quality of life.

Who will the program serve:
The NMP is designed to assist local merchants (typically will gross sales of under $1 M) by providing access to lending capital, facade improvement and streetscape enhancement. Application of these tools will help upgrade the retail experience, strengthen businesses and preserve neighborhood character, history and ethnic flavor.

Program Design:
Eight neighborhoods have been identified to participate as part of a 36 -month phased program:

  • Upper Broad Street
  • Lower Broad Street
  • Olneyville Square
  • Wickenden Street/Fox Point
  • Chalkstone Avenue
  • Atwells Avenue
  • Charles Street/Hopkins Square
  • Cranston Street

Using the Main Street four point approach - design, economic restructuring, promotion and organization - the City will work with existing and emerging merchant associations to identify projects and businesses most in need of assistance.

The Main Street initiative is a community-driven, comprehensive methodology used to revitalize older, traditional business districts throughout the United States. The Main Street approach advocates a return to community self-reliance, local empowerment, and the rebuilding of traditional commercial districts based on their unique assets: distinctive architecture, a pedestrian-friendly environment, personal service, local ownership, and a sense of community.
