What is Providence Tomorrow?

Providence Tomorrow is an innovative and inclusive planning process designed to create a framework for growth and preservation of Providence neighborhoods. It consists of two distinct parts: comprehensive planning and neighborhood planning. The outcome of both of these processes will be the creation of guiding documents that will help direct the growth and vision for our city’s future.

On May 31, 2006, Mayor Cicilline and the City Council announced the creation of Providence Tomorrow–an innovative and inclusive planning process designed to create a framework for growth and preservation of Providence neighborhoods.Over the past few years, the city has experienced over $2 billion dollars of private investment in both downtown and the neighborhoods. This renewed interest in Providence has brought the delicate balance of growth and preservation to the forefront of issues facing our city. As we embark on updates to the Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinance, it is imperative that the residents and business owners of Providence help us craft the vision for the future of our city and neighborhoods.

Crucial to the success of this initiative is broad–based public involvement.Providence is a diverse city, and the vision for our future must be created with input from all.To ensure that everyone has an opportunity to participate, the city is using an innovative process that focuses the energy of participants during a single week. Known as “charrettes,” these multi–day planning sessions allow for people to participate in a variety of ways during a one–week period where ideas expressed at the beginning of the week can be transformed into plans by the end of the week. A series of charrettes will be held throughout the city to create neighborhood plans. The first charrette in the fall of 2006 will look at growth and preservation issues citywide to establish the framework for updates to the Comprehensive Plan and the neighborhood plans.

Throughout the planning process, this webpage will continue to grow and expand as it becomes a clearinghouse of information and a key element of our outreach strategy.

Providence Tomorrow Future and Goals

Ultimately, the goal of the Providence Tomorrow process will be to create a series of documents that will help guide and direct the growth of the City. These documents will address both city-wide concerns and neighborhood-specific issues. As the process moves forward and documents are drafted, we will make these documents available on-line so that you can review and comment on them.
