Overview

On February 9, 2006, Mayor Cicilline announced the creation of the Transit 2020 Working Group to help the City evaluate and plan for its future transit needs. The City of Providence and its metropolitan area are facing growth pressures at levels not experienced for decades. Current and projected growth presents us with the need to comprehensively plan in order to meet emerging transit and transportation demands. If this challenge is not carefully and creatively addressed, the continued revitalization of the Providence metropolitan area will be impeded and the very quality of life that is a major catalyst of this growth will be degraded.

The purpose of the “Transit 2020 Working Group” is to identify and prioritize the current, emergent, and future transit challenges for the Providence metropolitan area. Additionally, the work of this group will inform a comprehensive regional transit study to which RIPTA and the City of Providence have made financial commitments. The conclusions of the Working Group will help guide the development of new transit alternatives to meet the challenges we face heading into the 21st century.
