Overview

In 2004, Mayor David Cicilline commissioned a study of the greater downtown area to create a vision for Providence in the year 2020 as well as establish an action plan to achieve that vision.  The purpose of the plan was to provide a framework for new private investment as well as provide priorities for public investment.  After interviewing four highly qualified teams, the city selected Sasaki Associates, an urban design firm based in Boston to lead the planning effort.

The study area (shown on the map below) encompassed Downcity, the Financial District, Capital Center, the Convention District, Old Harbor, the Jewelry District, Fox Point, Narragansett Landing, and the Promenade District.
